West End Creamery gets its name from the adjoining West End Dairy, a traditional New England family dairy farm started by Joseph VandenAkker in the earl
y 1900's. By the 1950's his two sons, Maynard and George, were also actively involved with the farm.
Located on the "west end" of Whitinsville, the dairy operated a retail milk route covering the local towns of Northbridge, Sutton, Uxbridge and Millville from the early '20's to 1968. In 1968 our family switched to a wholesale milk market and continued the dairy operation until 1987. Since then, the VandenAkker family has continued to farm the land by raising replacement cows for other farms in the Northeast, by raising beef cattle, and by growing hay to use for their own animals and to sell to other farms.
The farm is now operated by George's son, Greg VandenAkker and his family, the 4th and 5th generations to live on this land. The farming continues, though
to aid in the sustainability of the family farm, the ice cream stand, West End Creamery was established in 1999, followed by a farm-themed 18-hole miniature golf course in 2006.
A lot has changed since Meindert and Willemke VandenAkker moved to the property at the turn of the century. Little did their son, Joseph, know that the dairy farm he began would still be going strong more than 100 years later!
