Employment

4/4/2008   We have temporarily stopped accepting applications for the 2008 season.

"Are you hiring"?  It's a question we're often asked.  We do have many of our staff from the 2007 season returning for the 2008 season,  but with some usual turnover (often graduating college seniors moving on), it's likely that we'll have at least a few positions available this season.  We're quite selective in adding new team members, but if, after reading what's below, you feel you have the "right stuff", bring it on -you're welcome to apply!

To become a Creamery team member no prior experience is necessary, but we are looking for smiling, friendly, outgoing, well mannered people to join our team.  You must be willing to learn new things, work hard and really enjoy helping our customers enjoy their visit to West End Creamery!  Up to date hiring needs can normally be found here, but you can always stop by and talk to Greg or Becky -introducing yourself in person is the best way to make your application stand out from the dozens of others that we receive during the course of the season.

Please keep a few things in mind:

? Contact us early!  Often the majority of our open positions have been filled by the time we open for the new season. We have a lot of great candidates come to the Creamery in mid-June who we have to turn away since we already have a full team.

?The busy part of the year at West End Creamery is our ice cream season- April through October.  Please keep in mind that we are busiest on weeknights and weekends, especially weekend nights, so those are the times when we need people to be available to work.  If you often go away with family or friends on summer weekends, you're going to have to explain to us how you're going to fit work into that schedule (and that'll be a really hard sell.)

? Our preference is to hire only those who will be with us through Labor Day into mid October (Columbus Day weekend is our usual closing date of the season).  So if you're a high school Senior who'll be leaving for college in August, you'll have to really impress us to make the team.  (So you underclassmen, take heart and don't be afraid to apply!)

? Scooping ice cream may look like fun from the customer side of the counter, but believe us, it's hard work!  It can get hot in the store, scooping takes a lot of physical strength, and it takes a lot of mental awareness to interact with customers and prepare their orders efficiently and correctly.  You must also be able to work well with the other team members.

? While we do tend to get a bit messy and sticky scooping ice cream and moving empty tubs around, we also try to have fun while working!  You will find it's a great opportunity to meet new friends!

All applications for employment at West End Creamery must be complete and be reviewed by West End staff.  You may be contacted for a personal interview.  We make our selections from those applicants who most closely meet our company standards.  Applicant evaluations are based on the following factors:  attitude, availability, enthusiasm, communication skills, courtesy, neatness and friendliness.

Our hiring rules:

  1. You have to be at least 16 years old.  (We may hire an occasional 15 year old, but those under 16 can only, by law, work limited hours).

  2. If under 18, you will need to obtain working papers from your school superintendent once you're hired.

  3. You need to commit to being available to work during the four holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Columbus Day). If you get one of those weekends off, consider it an unexpected surprise!

  4. A job requirement is that you be available to work every weekend during the summer (within reason: one or two missed weekends during the summer are understandable, provided you’ve let us know at least two weeks in advance.)  Our minimum scheduling requirement is that you work one weekend closing shift, one other weekend shift (day or night), and at least one other shift any time during the week or weekend.

  5. You need to commit to staying with us through mid October, unless you specifically tell us otherwise during the interview process.

  6. You need to love interacting with people!
